On his initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” New York City, declaring “a new era” and an ambitious beginning to his term.

A Historic Mayor

The new figure, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the citizens whose grasp the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani stated.

Defying advice to be modest, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will govern boldly and broadly.”

Adhering to Democratic Socialist Ideals

Mamdani did not shy away from his socialist politics. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my convictions for concern of being called radical,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.

The ceremony was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over political establishments.

A Costly Blueprint

Mamdani now faces one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:

• Universal childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A halt to rent increases for approximately 1 million households
• A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion cost of these initiatives may be challenging to fund. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Challenges

The new mayor also faces concern from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has attempted to address these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was reportedly surprisingly cordial.

The Fundamental Challenges of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in delivering city upkeep: sanitation, reducing the rat infestation, fixing roadways, and making sure reliable transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
